UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It works on a similar principle to SPF but measures something broader. While SPF (Sun Protection Factor) primarily quantifies how well a sunscreen blocks UVB radiation, UPF measures how much of both UVA and UVB radiation a fabric allows to pass through to the skin.
A garment rated UPF 50 allows just 1/50th of the sun's UV radiation through — blocking 98% of both UVA and UVB rays. This is a meaningful distinction from sunscreen, where broad-spectrum UVA protection is harder to standardise and varies considerably between products.
UPF ratings are grouped into three protection categories:

For context, a standard white cotton T-shirt offers roughly UPF 5–7 when dry — meaning it transmits about 15–20% of UV radiation. When wet, that drops to around UPF 3. This is why a thin shirt at the beach is not the protection most people assume it is.
What Affects a Fabric's UPF Rating
UPF is not just about the label — it depends on a combination of physical properties in the fabric itself. UV radiation can be absorbed, reflected, or scattered by textile fibres, and how effectively a fabric does this depends on several factors.
Fibre type
Synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon naturally absorb UV radiation more effectively than most untreated natural fibres. Their molecular structure interacts with UV wavelengths in a way that cotton and linen do not. A dense polyester fabric can achieve a UPF well above 100 without any chemical treatment.
Weave density
This is one of the biggest variables. A tighter weave leaves fewer gaps for UV to pass through. Research has shown dramatic differences: fabrics in satin and twill weaves achieved UPF values exceeding 400, while plain weaves of the same material often fell below 45. If you hold a fabric up to the light and can see through it, its UPF will be low.
Colour
Darker and more saturated colours absorb more UV radiation, giving them higher UPF values than lighter shades of the same fabric. Black, navy, and deep red consistently outperform white and pastel colours. Bleached fabrics score particularly poorly because the bleaching process strips out natural UV-absorbing compounds like waxes and pigments.
Stretch
When fabric is stretched, the gaps between fibres widen and more UV passes through. A study published in Materials found that the UPF of a cotton/Lycra knitted fabric dropped from 23 to 10 with just 15% stretch. This is especially relevant for activewear and swimwear that fits tightly over the body.
Moisture
Wet fabric generally offers less UV protection than dry fabric — particularly cotton. A cotton shirt that provides UPF 7 when dry may drop to UPF 3 when soaked. This happens because water fills the air gaps between fibres and reduces the optical scattering that normally blocks UV. Synthetic fabrics are less affected, which is one reason polyester-based rash guards are preferred for water sports.
Chemical treatments
Many UPF garments are treated with UV-absorbing additives during manufacture. Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles can be embedded into fibres or applied as coatings, boosting UPF significantly. Some laundry additives claim to add UV protection to regular clothing, though the effect is modest compared to purpose-built fabrics.
UPF vs SPF: A Direct Comparison
A 2022 study published in Cancers conducted a head-to-head comparison of UV-protective clothing against sunscreen under controlled laboratory conditions. The result was clear: four modern textiles provided superior UV protection compared to two sunscreens tested using the same methodology, with all fabrics blocking both UVB and full-spectrum UVA more effectively than the sunscreens.
This is not surprising when you consider the real-world failure points of sunscreen:

The practical implication is straightforward: for the parts of your body that clothing can cover, UPF fabric is more reliable than sunscreen. For exposed areas — face, hands, ears, feet — sunscreen remains essential.
Choosing UPF Clothing: What to Look For
Not all UPF clothing is created equal, and the label alone does not guarantee long-term protection. Here is what to check.
Look for certified UPF ratings. The most widely recognised testing standards are AS/NZS 4399 (Australia/New Zealand), AATCC 183 (United States), and EN 13758 (Europe). These involve laboratory testing with a spectrophotometer on the actual fabric — not a marketing estimate. The Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation is another credible indicator.
Choose UPF 30 or higher. While UPF 15 is classified as "good," a rating of 30 or above provides meaningfully better protection and a larger margin for the natural degradation that comes with wear and washing.
Consider the garment's lifespan. Research has shown that some UPF garments lost 70–78% of their UV protection after 50 wash cycles. Heavier, well-constructed fabrics from reputable brands tend to maintain their rating longer. Replace garments that become visibly thin, stretched, or faded.
Prioritise coverage. A UPF 50+ shirt protects your torso, but your face, neck, hands, and lower legs remain exposed. A wide-brimmed hat (at least 7.5 cm brim) reduces UV to the face and neck by roughly 50%. Pair UPF clothing with sunscreen on any uncovered skin.
Think about moisture and stretch. If you plan to wear UPF clothing in or near water, choose synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon) over cotton. They maintain their UPF when wet and dry far faster. Avoid garments that stretch so tightly that the fabric becomes sheer — this significantly reduces protection.
