Most people who spend time working on a tan think carefully about their skin — SPF, exposure time, skin type. Far fewer think about their eyes. But the same ultraviolet radiation that triggers melanin production in your skin can cause serious, sometimes irreversible damage to your eyes and the delicate skin around them. How UV Radiation Affects Your Eyes

Your eyes are remarkably sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. Unlike your skin, which has melanin, a stratum corneum, and multiple cell layers designed to absorb UV, the structures of your eye offer relatively little natural defence.

UVB radiation (280–315 nm) is mostly absorbed by the cornea and the lens, which protects the retina but exposes those front structures to damage. UVA radiation (315–400 nm) penetrates deeper, passing through the cornea and lens to reach the retina at the back of the eye. Both wavelengths contribute to eye disease, but through different mechanisms and at different depths.

The risk is not just from direct sunlight. UV reflected off sand, water, and concrete can reach your eyes from below — angles that a sun hat alone cannot block. Sand reflects 10–25% of UV radiation, and water reflects up to 30%, meaning your eyes receive UV from multiple directions while you are lying on a beach or beside a pool.

Photokeratitis: Sunburn of the Eye

The most immediate risk of unprotected UV exposure is photokeratitis — essentially a sunburn of the cornea. It is the eye equivalent of what happens to unprotected skin in strong sun, and it can happen in as little as 15–30 minutes of intense UV exposure.

Symptoms typically appear 6–12 hours after exposure and include:

Photokeratitis usually resolves within 24–48 hours as the corneal epithelium regenerates, but it is extremely uncomfortable. Repeated episodes can cause lasting damage to the cornea. The condition is more commonly associated with snow blindness — skiers and mountaineers at high altitude — but it can absolutely occur during beach tanning on a high UV index day, especially when reflected UV is factored in.

Long-Term Eye Damage from UV Exposure

While photokeratitis is acute and temporary, the more serious concern is cumulative damage that builds over years of unprotected exposure.

Cataracts

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates that up to 20% of all cataract cases globally may be caused or significantly worsened by prolonged UV exposure. UVB radiation is absorbed by the lens and, over time, causes oxidative damage to lens proteins, leading to the clouding that characterises cataracts. A 2023 study of a US nationwide cohort confirmed a significant association between cumulative ultraviolet radiation exposure and increased incidence of cataracts.

Eyelid skin cancer

The skin of the eyelid is the thinnest on the human body — roughly 0.5 mm thick — and it receives substantial UV exposure. Eyelid cancers account for approximately 5–10% of all skin malignancies, with an incidence of about 15.7 cases per 100,000 people per year in the United States. The lower eyelid is the most common site, precisely because it receives the most direct and reflected UV. Basal cell carcinoma makes up roughly 90% of eyelid skin cancers.

What to Look for in Sunglasses

Not all sunglasses protect your eyes equally. The tint of a lens and its UV-blocking ability are two entirely separate properties — a dark lens without proper UV filtering is actually worse than no sunglasses at all, because the darkened view causes your pupils to dilate, allowing more UV radiation in.

The critical point: always check the UV rating, not just the tint. A pair of category 3 sunglasses with no UV filter will dilate your pupils in the shade of the dark lenses while letting UV pass straight through — the worst of both worlds.

Practical Eye Safety While Tanning

Wear UV400 sunglasses. Every time you sunbathe, wear sunglasses that block 99–100% of UV radiation. This alone can reduce your ocular UV exposure by up to 99%, according to research cited by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Choose a wraparound style. Standard flat-front sunglasses leave gaps at the sides, above, and below the lenses. When you are lying down and UV is reflecting off sand, water, or a sun lounger, these gaps become significant entry points. Wraparound frames or large-lens designs close these gaps.

Do not rely on closed eyelids. Your eyelids are translucent to UV radiation. Closing your eyes while sunbathing is not adequate protection — UV still penetrates the thin eyelid skin and reaches the structures beneath. This is also why the eyelids themselves are so vulnerable to skin cancer.

Wear a wide-brimmed hat as well. A hat with a brim of at least 7.5 cm reduces the UV reaching your eyes and upper face by roughly 50%. Combined with sunglasses, this provides excellent protection. A hat alone, however, does not block reflected UV from below.

Never skip goggles in a tanning bed. Indoor tanning beds can produce UV levels up to 100 times those of natural sunlight. Standard sunglasses are not sufficient — the protective goggles provided by the salon are designed to block the concentrated UV output of the lamps. The American Academy of Ophthalmology specifically recommends against using a tanning bed without proper eye protection.

Apply SPF around the eyes. Use a mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) on the skin around your eyes, including the eyelids if you are not wearing sunglasses. This protects the thin periocular skin from UV damage and reduces your risk of eyelid skin cancer.
